Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is BEEPO?

Beepo is an end-to-end encrypted, secure communication tool to uphold human rights and empower sovereign communities.

Beepo is a secure messaging app, multi-chain crypto wallet, and Web3 browser built with cutting-edge technology, enjoy free messaging and calling on a non-custodial blockchain wallet.

Who is Behind Beepo?

The Beepo app is built by a team of entrepreneurs and research students from West Africa powered by Nebula Technologies. Nebula Technologies builds products, tools and infrastructure for resilient, sustainable and inclusive communities.

Why Beepo?

The internet as we know it has been dominated by a few corporations with a financial incentive to collect and sell data for decades. Beepo is a viable alternative. Beepo communicates privately and securely using cutting-edge technology. Beepo employs an end-to-end encrypted model that ensures that no third parties have access to users' data. Beepo is a messenger, a cryptocurrency wallet, and a web3 browser that gives you complete control over your assets and communication.

What is the purpose of Beepo?

To organize, sovereign communities require uncensored, private, and secure communication. Because of its suitability for mobile use, messaging offers a promising path to the adoption of advanced blockchains. As a result, more communities will be able to access payment networks and other decentralized applications.

Beepo is much more than a messenger in the end. It is a communication tool in the broadest sense, combining asset management with the crypto wallet, full content creation/social media experience, and access to a world of decentralized applications through the web3 browser.

What differentiates Beepo from other messaging apps?

End-to-end encryption is available in most messengers. The company providing the service cannot read the content of your messages because of this standard protection. However, the information flowing through their network is open to the public, allowing for interpretation of who is talking to whom and from where. Signing up for traditional messengers also requires identifying information, such as a phone number, which is usually linked to a slew of other personal information about you. To get started with Beepo, you don't need to provide any personal information. Despite using an end-to-end encrypted infrastructure, Because your chat data is encrypted on your offline storage rather than in the cloud, and is also attached to a hashed unique ID that can only be validated by your wallet phrase, Beepo has no idea who is contacting whom or the content of your messages.

How does Beepo connect to the Blockchain?

To connect to the blockchain, simply launch the Beepo app! It should be noted that the wallet and browser are the only ones that interact with the supported blockchains. The blockchain does not store messages. Messages are not stored nor tracked by these blockchains.

What languages do you support?

Beepo is currently available in four languages: English, French, German, and Chinese.

Beepo translations can be contributed to by anyone. If you find a typo or a mistranslation, or if you simply want your language to be represented. Please contact Customer Service. We are currently putting in place infrastructure to facilitate these contributions.

Is Beepo Free to Use?

Absolutely. To use Beepo's core features, no payment is required. To get the most out of Beepo, keep the cryptocurrencies and BEEP on hand (Beepo Token). Certain features may necessitate the use of BEEP, as this contributes to the success of our project.

To obtain BEEP, you can use an exchange DApp to trade crypto you already own, or you can purchase tokens and BEEP in exchange for fiat currency (e.g., Euro or US dollar) using a fiat-to-crypto exchange.

I would like to contribute to the project, where would you suggest I start?

Beepo is an Open-Core project that welcomes both technical and non-technical contributions. The community group is an excellent place to begin. You can connect with active contributors and members here who can help you promote, teach about, or otherwise contribute to the next generation of the web. We're developing specialized platforms to make it easier to onboard Contributors.

What is BEEP?

BEEP is the Beepo ecosystem project token; holding the BEEP token grants its owner exclusive access to certain features or incentives. Utility of the token is a primary goal of the Beepo, as the token's value contributes to the project's long-term viability.

Keys and Wallets

What are accounts?

Beepo wallets are similar to bank accounts. CELO, BINANCE, SOLANA, and ETHEREUM are the four Blockchains that power Beepo's wallets. Like a bank account, a wallet usually has an address, a balance, and the ability to make transactions. Each Wallet/Token has its own public transaction history. You can see all of your Wallets/Tokens in the wallet tab.

What is my wallet address?

Your wallet address, like your traditional bank account, SWIFT, or IBAN numbers, serves as a transaction identifyer but has up to 42 characters and may begin with 0x, 5d, or otherwise depending on the blockchain; however, unlike SWIFT or IBAN numbers, blockchain addresses are assigned by central authorities such as banks. Long before a wallet discovered it, every possible blockchain address already existed. Because blockchain addresses are the result of a mathematical operation, this is the case.

Profile and Settings

What is Account ID?

Your Beepo profile's account ID is a unique identifier that can be used to add new friends and identify friends in groups. The Beepo account ID is not linked to any personal information other than what you put in your Beepo profile. A returned validation from the one-way Seed phrase hash activates your Beepo ID. A one-way hash function, also known as a message digest, converts a variable-length input string into a fixed-length binary sequence that is computationally difficult to invert—that is, generate the original string from the hash.

What is a seed phrase?

In Beepo, your seed phrase is made up of 12 words. It's where your chat ID comes from, as well as your wallet's account keys. Through some cryptographic wizardry, all keys are derived from this first seed. If you lose access to your account, such as by losing your phone, you can use your seed phrase to gain access to your account and wallet. You can regenerate the exact same keychain of identities using the same wizardry.

What should I do with this seed phrase?

Your seed phrase can be found under Profile > Privacy and security > Seed phrase should be backed up. Make a note of it. Keep an eye on it. The most secure option is to keep your seed phrase on paper and away from your devices.

If I lose my phone, how can I access my accounts?

Your 12-word seed phrase is required to gain access to your accounts. You can regain access to your chat profile and all of your accounts using this seed phrase.

Note that you can restore your wallet easily. However, because chat information is only stored locally on your phone, you may lose access to previous chats. We're working on setting up optional encrypted cloud storage so you can save your chats using your account ID.

Chat

Where are my messages stored? Are they on the blockchain?

Messages are temporarily stored on a server, but once you open Beepo and connect to the network, they are automatically deleted and stored on your phone. Messages pass through an end-to-end encrypted layer on their way to you, but not through the Blockchain. To put it another way, they aren't stored on the blockchain, and sending them doesn't cost anything.

Are my messages really private?

They are, indeed. Every message is encrypted end-to-end, making it impossible for unintended audiences to read the content. Only the intended recipient of a message can decrypt the content.

Browser

How is this browser different from other browsers?

Beepo comes with a web3 browser. A browser with web3 support can open any website, but it also allows you to use decentralized apps, or 'DApps.' Beepo accomplishes this by injecting an object into the DOM of a website, allowing that website to refer to your account on the blockchain—with your permission, of course.

DApps typically use the blockchain to send and receive data and make payments that would otherwise be stored on a centralized server. The risk of a single party controlling and profiting from your data is low with DApps.

What is DApps?

Decentralized applications (dApps) are digital programs or applications that run on a blockchain or peer-to-peer (P2P) network of computers rather than on a single computer. DApps (also known as "dapps") exist outside of the control and jurisdiction of a single authority. DApps, which are frequently built on the Ethereum platform, can be used for a wide range of applications, including gaming, finance, and social media.

What are DApp permissions?

To view and use your wallet address and/or chat key, DApps must first ask for permission. A DApp will usually ask you to connect your wallet. When it does, a popup appears asking if you want to deny or allow the request. Each account in your wallet has its own permissions for connecting your wallet address. Permission to the previously connected account is revoked when you grant permission to a new account. If you decline a permission request, the DApp will have no knowledge of your blockchain address and will be unable to conduct transactions.

Note that if the DApp has saved your address, Beepo will not be able to remove it.

Wallet

How secure is my wallet?

Any keys generated by your wallet are encrypted and stored locally on your phone, if available, using secure hardware. You are the only one who has access. You can store your keys on a Keycard for added security.

What does it mean to sign a transaction?

A transaction is any change made to the blockchain. Information is sent from one location to another. This data could be assets or a contract. When you use Beepo to sign a transaction, you are approving that transaction. Beepo will inform you of the type of transaction you are being asked to complete.

What assets does the Status wallet support?

Beepo wallet currently supports CELO, Ethereum, Binance, and Solana blockchain approved tokens.

Why do I have to pay a network fee for transactions?

The network fee, also known as "gas," covers the computational costs of performing a blockchain action. It is a network standard. Without the use of gas, no changes to the blockchain, including user transactions, can be made. With each transaction, the Beepo wallet allows you to adjust the network fee. Your transaction will be processed faster if you pay a higher fee.
